District development concept for Weilburg-Drommershausen

Objective:

The progressively structured district development concept offers the possibility of an interdisciplinary solid preparation and subsequent implementation of strategies for the strengthening of the district.

Here, above all, the aspects of quality of life and living are looked into:

Proposals for locally tailor-made measures for the improvement of the quality of living:

  • A new use or conversion of existing vacant properties
    Changed demands on the living space from different construction phases (barrier freedom, energy efficiency, household size)
  • New types of accommodation (multi-generation living, caring for older inhabitants in own house)
  • Determination of the need for action to increase the quality of life with increasing average age of the population:
  • Proposal for meeting everyday requirements & ÖPNV coverage
  • Design of public space
  • Basic concept identification for urban land-use planning, traffic planning and child care
Location: City of Weilburg an der Lahn, district of Drommershausen in the county of Limburg-Weilburg
Basis: By order of the magistrate of the city of Weilburg an der Lahn
Process: Beside the evaluation of statistical data for population trends and the economic situation of the municipality, extensive primary data was gathered. To this end, vacant states as well as uses were mapped and voluntary, personal on site surveys were carried out all over the country. These included topics like shopping behaviour, leisure behaviour and commuter behaviour as well as information about the building concerned (modernisation plan etc.) and its surrounds. Local knowledge as well as the willingness of the inhabitants to initiate the necessary steps "in the own town" are prerequisites for the success of the concept. For instance, ideas for "problem properties", a garden land register and a design primer for the old town centre were worked out in cooperation with a working group. A time and measures plan is also part of the concept.
